Two motorists were killed and two others seriously injured in two separate accidents within a mile of one another along the four lane in Highland.

On Wednesday, May 2, William A Volner, 82, of Cherokee Village was killed when the vehicle he was driving collided with another near the intersection of Arkansas Traveler Road and Highway 62/412.

According to a collision report provided by the Highland Police Department, Volner was traveling westbound on Highway 62/412 in a 2001 Oldsmobile Bravada when his vehicle crossed into the eastbound lanes and struck Billy Hughes, 59, of Winnsboro, Tex. who was driving a 2009 Chevy KH.

Hughes swerved both ways to avoid the collision, but was unsuccessful.

The force of the accident overturned the Volner vehicle, ejecting the driver.

Volner was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hughes was transported by Spring River Paramedic Ambulance to Fulton County Hospital for injuries he received in the accident.

Less than 48 hours later, on Friday, May 4, a second deadly accident in Highland took the life of a Hardy man near the entrance to Southern Glass on the four lane at Highland.

The accident occurred when Jennifer Elliot, 32, of Hardy crossed the center line in her Pontiac Grand Prix and ran off the roadway -- striking a utility pole and over-turning. A passenger in the car, Donnie Elliot, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jennifer Elliot was transported to Fulton County Hospital by Spring River Paramedic Ambulance Service for serious injuries.
