Viola fifth too much for Bears

Thursday, May 10, 2012

The Viola Longhorns rode a seven-run fifth inning to come from behind and knock off Mammoth Spring 10-2 in the championship game of the Class 1A Region 2 Tournament May 7 at the Cougar Sports Complex in Brockwell.

Both teams advanced to the Class 1A State Tournament in Taylor.

The Bears jumped in front 2-1 in the fourth inning, thanks to a two-run homer from Seth Brown.

That proved to be Mammoth Spring's lone runs of the contest.

The Horns warmed up and crossed the plate seven times in the bottom of the fifth, and twice more in the sixth, to wrap up yet another regional tournament title.

Dolan Johnston was the winning pitcher for Viola, allowing five hits, while giving up one walk and fanning nine in seven innings of work.

Mason Brown tossed four-and-a-third innings for Mammoth Spring, giving up two hits while walking four and striking out three. Josh Cathey came on in relief and worked an inning-and-two-thirds, allowing five hits and striking out one.

Blane Sanders paced Viola at the plate with a hit and three RBIs, while Joey Prinner had a hit and two ribbies.

Devin Brown, Austin Robbins and Clay Shrable logged an RBI apiece for the Horns.

Mason Brown, Collin Powell, Cathey and Ryan Roberson all hit safely for the Bears.

In the semi-final round May 5, the Longhorns hammered Hillcrest 17-7.

Clay Shrable had a monster afternoon at the plate, jacking a grand-slam, along with a three-run homer in Viola's run-ruled rout of the Screamin' Eagles.

In the other semi, Mammoth Spring edged past the homestanding Izard County Cougars 6-5.
