Thursday, May 10, 2012

The Melbourne Lady Bearkatz finished atop the standings in the 3,200-meter relay at the Class 3A State Track and Field Meet in Prescott May 3.

Their time of 10:32.96 was just four seconds off the Class 3A state record turned in by Mansfield in 2008.

Shelbie Byram, Lindsey Wetzel, Loni Beth Cooper and Shelby Brokaw make up the girls' 3,200-meter team for Melbourne.

They also won the event in February at the Class 1A-4A Indoor State Track and Field Meet, turning in a time of 10:59.

The Lady Bearkatz came in eighth in the team standings with 29 points.

Harding Academy won the girls title, finishing 73 points better than Jessieville (151-78).

In other events, Byram finished second in the 1,600 and 3,200 with times of 5:55.36 and 12:59.23. Brokaw finished sixth in the 400 with a time of 1:04.73.
