Cats and Comets close out regular season

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

Two old Oregon County rivals, the Alton Comets and Thayer Bobcats, hooked up for the regular season finale on the baseball diamond May 17.

And when the dust settled, things went the way of the Thayer Bobcats in this one.

Thayer jumped out quick in the first inning, then tacked on four more runs in the top of the second to hold a 6-0 lead.

With an Alton runner on board, Holman smacked a double to bring him in and get the Comets on the scoreboard.

With the bases loaded, Alton tripped up the Bobcats with a sacrifice bunt, which scored the Comets' second run of the inning.

Childers bore down and threw strikes for Thayer to end the inning, leaving a couple of Comets on the bags.

Alton slugged a long ball deep in center field, but in an attempt to pick up a second base advantage, the runner was not able to beat the strong throw from center field and was tagged out on the slide.

Wes Carswell did an outstanding job behind the plate catching Alton's sophomore pitcher Frank Alford for the Comets, but Bobcat senior Austin Henry dialed in on an Alford pitch and sent one over the left field fence to score three Cats.

Thayer's Henry, moved over to the pitcher's mound, from his position at third base, to close out the Comets' last batters and wind up the game in five innings. Bobcats held a 14-2 advantage over the Comets.
