Hailing from Cajun Country in Louisiana, she has brought food, a special piece of her heritage, to share with Cajun food lovers in the area. After purchasing the unsightly vacant building, she and her husband have remodeled to highlight her love of old furnishings and every country. The tin from the old roof adorns the ceiling, adding to the nostalgia of the Lil' Bit Cajun, the area's one stop location for Cajun food and cooking supplies.
The family offers the Gusteaux brand of seasonings that are manufactured in Louisiana from a family recipe. Cookbooks utilizing the family recipes are also available for sale in the store.
The business will celebrate its grand opening with music and food on June 16. Proceeds from food sales will benefit the Evening Shade Roundup. Redi burgers, a family favorite, and shrimp fettucini will be a couple of the dishes available.
After locating the building's owner in Ohio, and purchasing the building, the family decided to replace only the roof but, after getting inside, much more work was required to make the store into the vision Herbert had. They have also added cedar to the walls and exterior of the building.
The business offers not only cajun seasonings but also frozen food that is prepared by Herbert.
It specializes in "everything Louisiana." There are a variety of dishes available with cajun flair, including whole stuffed deboned chickens, shrimp and sausage dishes. A unique offering from Lil' Bit Cajun allows busy families to purchase the frozen meals, and simply put them in the oven to enjoy a cajun meal at a reasonable price.
The store will offer a variety of foods, including alligator dressing, crawfish etoufee, shrimp etoufee, jambalaya and other frozen dishes, as well as pork and crawfish boudin.
Herbert, who also serves on the Evening Shade City Council, explained the little town is slowly drying up and she would like to revitalize the downtown and attract people to the area.
Herbert is raising money during her grand opening for the Evening Shade Roundup, a fun filled music event held each summer on the Main Street.
For everything Cajun, visit the store Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The grand opening will begin Saturday at 10 a.m. The public is encouraged to come out and try the cajun specialties, and take home a few seasonings and other unique gifts from the store.
