Grizzly summer basketball camp coming up

Thursday, June 14, 2012

Area boys and girls who will be in kindergarten through eighth grade during the 2012-2013 academic year can develop their basketball skills during the annual Grizzly Summer Basketball Camps at the West Plains Civic Center arena.

The camps will be directed by Yancey Walker, head coach of the Missouri State University-West Plains Grizzly Basketball team.

The camp, set for July 20-21 and July 23-25 will be divided into two sessions. Boys and girls in kindergarten through fourth grade will meet from 8 a.m. to noon each day; boys and girls in fifth through eighth grades will meet from 1 to 5 p.m. each day.

The camp sessions will concentrate on the basic basketball fundamentals, Walker explained. Primary emphasis will be placed on passing, shooting, dribbling and footwork. "The camp will emphasize the skills needed to be a complete player in the future," he said.

Campers will be able to compete in several different contests, and awards will be handed out to the winners, Walker added. In addition, each camper will receive a Grizzly T-shirt.

Walker said he will take registrations until the first day of each camp session, but he asks those who plan to attend to call ahead to 417-255-7991 so organizers will know how many will be attending. The cost of the camp is $40 per person for the two-day camp and $60 per person for the three-day camp.

Registration forms are available for download through the Grizzly Basketball website, http://wp.missouristate.edu/grizzly/bb.h.... Click on the summer camp logo in the lower right-hand side of the page. Registration forms also will be available at the camp on Monday, he added.

For more information, call Walker at 417-255-7991.
