Father Syl Bauer, 96, the founding pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Thayer, recently celebrated his "70th Jubilee of Ordination" to the Catholic preisthood. Some 40 priests joined Fr. Bauer, and Bishop John Gaydos to help him give thanks of God for 70 years of priestly ministry.

For decades, Fr. Bauer gave pastoral care and solice to God's people in eastern, southern and central Missouri.

It is exceptional for a Catholic priest to observe and celebrate the 70th jubilee of his ordination. This point made the celebrtation even more joyous for those attending.

Fr. Syl Bauer, was ordained a priest in St. Louis, by the late John Cardinal Glennon, on December 19, 1942, during World War II.

He retired as an active parish pastor in 1986, from the Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau.

Among his other assignments in the Springfield-Cape Girardeau Diocese were St. Mary's West Plains, St. Mary's Joplin; Immaculate Conception, New Madrid; Cathedral of St. Agnes, Springfield; and Holy Trinity, Marshfield.

From 1986-2010 he lived in retirement, in a renovated log cabin, at rural Freeburg. He is now resident chaplain at a nursing home in Westphalia, Mo.
