Mammoth Spring has begun the formation of its mens and womens softball leagues, and will continue the tradition of using the leagues to help fund the town's Little League program.
Little League president Danny White said, each of the last four years, mens and womens softball teams have given $200 per team to the Mammoth Spring Little League, for the right to compete in a league of their own.
White, who also serves as league director for the mens and womens leagues, said the mens teams typically play on Monday nights and the womens teams play on Tuesdays. That could change this year, however, depending on how many teams sign up to participate.
On July 20, White met with the managers of several teams at Hog Wild Pizza in Mammoth Spring. During the meeting, White said there are currently 12 mens teams and five womens teams registered, but he expects a few more teams to join the leagues before play begins.
All interested participants must be 18 years old and out of high school. Players must conform to the "Mammoth Spring Little League Player Code of Conduct." Teams may have as many players as they want, but a minimum of 10 players per team is required, with at least eight players on the field at all times during games.
The only significant rule change from last year is that, this season, a team is allowed to hit three over--the--fence home runs per game. After that, a hit over the fence is a foul ball.
Interested parties can call Danny White at 870-371-0410 to enter a team or player. Games are expected to start Aug. 13.
