"He is a good guy," said Viola resident Wilma McCandlis. "He has always tried to come to the Viola Homecoming and, this year, he supplied the food for our 50th Class Reunion."
While Webb coached at Mountain Home from 1979 to 1995, he began his teaching career in Viola. Viola residents remember Webb as being from a family of six children who grew up in the Mitchell area, and attended Viola schools. His brother, Jim, also went into coaching, and was on the 1957 basketball team which won the state title.
During his years of coaching baseball, Webb led his teams to 14 state tournament appearances, and twice played in the state finals.
According to McCandlis, Webb still volunteers as a Peewee basketball coach in Mountain Home. "My grandchildren have gone to summer camps he's been involved in," McCandlis said. "He is so good with kids. They all think he is the greatest."
At the July 13 induction ceremony in Hot Springs, Webb said being chosen for the Hall of Fame was not something he expected, but being selected was a great honor.
