The Calico Rock Museum will hold the grand opening of its Native American Exhibit "The Birth of the Ozarks" at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8. The museum and the Calico Rock Artisans Cooperative share a building on Main Street, (Highway 5 at the White River Bridge).

Calico Rock will celebrate that day as "Native American Day." Events include an 1800's Mountain Man Rendezvous encampment, and Ron Ward and the Native American Dancers in two performances. Odell Jackson, Roger and Ronnie Fountain will play music and sing all day, and Sandy Conway demonstrates cooking over an open fire.

At 3:00 p.m. a "Walk of Remembrance," honoring those that traveled the "Trail of Tears," begins at the Museum and ends in Rand Park. In 1838, the Benge Route of the Trail of Tears crossed a few miles north of Calico Rock.

If you would like to join the "Walk" either on foot or horseback or if you have a team drawn wagon, contact Gloria Gushue, Executive Director of the Calico Rock Museum Foundation, at 870-297-4129 or via e-mail at ggushue@gmail.com. Visit www.calicorockmuseum.com and click on "Events."
