New School Year to begin

The new school year will begin on Monday, Aug. 20 at area school districts.

Open houses are planned for Thursday, Aug. 16 at the following schools to give parents and students a chance to visit with teachers and administrators, and get class schedules:

Salem Schools: 6 p.m. open house

Viola Schools: 7 p.m. open house

Izard Consolidated: 6 p.m. open house

Melbourne High School: 7 p.m. orientation for seventh graders and new students. Orientation for ninth graders will follow.

Marine meeting

scheduled for Aug. 28

Attention all local Marines -- we will be holding an informal get-together on Tuesday, Aug. 28, at 7 p.m. at the Cherokee Village Senior Center.

Bring yourself and your memories -- no membership required. Hope to see you there.

Friends of Animals

Rummage Sale Aug. 25

The Horseshoe Bend Friends of Animals will sponsor a Rummage and Bake Sale on Saturday, Aug. 25 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The sale will be held at the Faith Presbyterian Church at Third and Church Streets in Horseshoe Bend. There will be lots of good stuff -- including furniture, interior decor and household items.

Master Gardener Plant Sale cancelled

The Izard County Master Gardener Plant sale, that was set for September 8, 2012, has been cancelled due to the severe drought.
