A railroad tie raft float will be held Saturday, Sept. 1, river level and weather permitting. Ties will put in the Current River at the Deer Leap boat ramp early in the morning, and float down to the picnic area where a lSlong raft, composed of some 200 ties, will be assembled.
It will then be floated down the river to a take-out point on the west bank by the Doniphan bridge, arriving at about 3:00 pm.
The ties have been seasoning at Robert Kirby's sawmill for the past year. Ray Joe Hastings will lead the tie raft crew on its re-creation of what was a common activity on Current River many years ago.
The event is sponsored by the Ripley County Historical Society, and the Doniphan Neighborhood Assistance Program.
The public is invited to observe all phases of the float. For further information, call the Current River Heritage Museum at 573-996-5298.
