A child's first sight of a firefighter should not come in an emergency situation, such as a fire at their home. Ash Flat Fire Chief Stacy Horton, and Adam Bates took the opportunity on Sept. 6, to visit a local daycare to familiarize children with firemen and their duties.

Children at Precious Ones Daycare were taught what to do in the event of a fire, and enjoyed practicing the "Stop, Drop and Roll" technique. Bates also dressed in his full firefighting gear to familiarize children with the sometimes scary appearance of firemen ready for battle. Horton stressed that, in the event of a fire, they not be scared and showed them how a firefighter might sound speaking with his air tank running.

The children were then treated to a full tour of the fire trucks complete with junior firefighter hats. The children were given an opportunity to ask the men questions and explore the trucks' contents.

Horton and Bates did the fire education session while doing a fire inspection at the daycare. The department also plans visits to schools and other day cares during Fire Safety Week in October
