Cabool elected to receive the opening kick. Landon Tyler booted a good one, allowing the special teams unit to get down the field and keep the Bulldogs deep in their own territory. An all out blitz by the Bobcat defense, nailed the Dog's quarterback Barnes, for a ten yard loss and, after a penalty and incomplete pass, Cabool was forced to punt.
Good blocking helped Mitch Webber reach the Cabool 24 yard line. The Bobcat's were on the move until a pitch-out got on the ground, and Cabool recovered at the Bobcat 18-yard line.
A Bulldogs third down and one attempt went awry, when a penalty set them back five yards. Then, quarterback Barnes tossed a pass under pressure, which wound up in the hands of Thayer linebacker Shelby Barton, who ran the interception into the end zone. The celebration ended quickly, because the Bobcat's were called for a block in the back. Thayer still had possession of the ball and a roughing the passer penalty moved the ball to the 15-yard line. A second touchdown was nullified, however, when a receiver caught a long pass, but stepped out of the back of the end zone.
Cabool was forced to punt after three plays, thanks to the Bobcat defense, and things again got a little wacky.
|A low snap forced the punter to take off running, with a Bobcat defender in hot pursuit. An emergency pooch kick sent the ball into the air, but the Thayer pursuer was called for roughing the kicker. That meant Cabool still had the ball as the first quarter ended with no score.|
In the second quarter, Thayer was able to move the ball, thanks to gains by Hargrove and Barton, and a 41-yarder by senior running back Jacob Alford. But Thayer's drive came to an end on a fourth and fourteen incomplete pass.
Jacob Alford jumped in front Cabool's receiver on a first down pass and came up with an interception that returned the ball to the Bobcats. At the 46-yard line, quarterback Mitch Webber fired a pass to Levi Hargove who was split wide to the right. Hargrove busted a couple of tackles, and sprinted across the goal line for a TD that held up, producing the first points of the game.
With the huge homecoming crowd behind the hometown team, Thayer's defense gave the Bulldogs nowhere to go. On a forth and twelve punt, Thayer's Levi Hargrove crashed for a block the Cabool punt. Shelby Barton picked up the blocked kick, and streaked fifteen yards across the goal line, for six Bobcat points. Landon Tyler's PAT kick was good for a fifteen to nothing Bobcat lead.
Excellent defense by Jordan Reed and Ridge Burke, forced the Bulldogs to give up the ball with a little over one minute remaining in the half.
Thayer was on the move with the clock ticking down and, with seven seconds left, Webber made a long toss into the end zone. A Cabool defender snatched it, and the half ended with Thayer up 15 to zero.
After a spirited performance by the Thayer Dance team and the Bobcat Pride Marching Band, the Homecoming clash continued, and Thayer was all business.
After marching down the field, Webber threw a TD bullet to junior wide out Jacob Foley, adding seven more to the Bobcat score. After Tyler's PAT was good, the Bobcat's lead was 22--0.
Good Thayer defense kept Cabool bottled up on Thayer's end of the field, and good offensive position after a punt led to an Alford touchdown run, and another good Tyler point-after kick. That made it 29-0 with 5:23 left in the third quarter.
Webber completed another 35-yard TD score to Foley, padding the Bobcat lead, and giving the junior varsity the opportunity to finish out the remaining time on the clock.
Cabool did finally pick up a TD late in the final quarter, and the Thayer Bobcats closed out Homecoming 2012 with a 36-6 win over the Cabool Bulldogs.
