Thayer knocks off Alton in regular season finale

Wednesday, October 10, 2012

A long standing Oregon County rivalry between the Alton Comets and Thayer Bobcats came to Red Overstreet softball field in Thayer for the last scheduled game of the 2012 softball season. Thayer came out on top, 7-4.

The Lady Bobcats put runners on base in the second inning, and picked up the first two runs of the game with aggressive base running to steal home, after pitches got past the Alton catcher.

With little chip shot hits, the Alton Lady Comets loaded up the bases and sent three Comets across home plate in the top of the fourth to go ahead three to two, before Lady Cat Jordan Alford was able to pitch out of the inning.

Megan Collins tagged a fly ball to right field to reach base, followed by a base hit from Sarah Morris. Alford hit a zipper, which was caught by Alton's third baseman for an out. With the Thayer runner having already headed down the line toward home, Alton's third baseman stepped on the bag for a smart double play. A caught fly ball by Aleasha Clark ended the inning.

Alton's Lady Comets went down in order in the top of the fifth. A base hit double put Thayer's Elly Burrell on second. A Lady Cat base hit sent Burrell home to bring the score closer at 4-3, Lady Comets in the lead at the end of five.

Thayer chipped away with base hits which turned into scores for the Lady Bobcats to go ahead and hold on for a 7-4 win.
