In Oregon County, approximately 62 percent of voters turned out for the General Election on Tuesday, Nov. 6. The Presidential Election, state races, and statewide referendums obviously stirred a lot of interest.

There are 7,347 registered voters in Oregon County and 4,523 of them voted in the General Election. At one voting poll, workers said they had never seen a crowd so large in all the years they've been working.

Oregon County residents will see no change in local offices. All incumbents up for election defeated their opponents. For the office of Sheriff, incumbent George Underwood defeated David Bailey, 2,407 to 1,733 votes. The highly sought after Associate Commissioner positions were both won by the incumbents. District One Commissioner incumbent John "Big John" Wrenfrow defeated Jason Kemper, 1,320 to 1,056 votes. District Two Commissioner incumbent Edward Casey defeated his opponent, Brad Vest, 1,176 to 821 votes. County Assessor Charles Alford defeated Russell Grooms, 2,853 to 1,521 votes. Public Administrator Mike Crawford defeated his opponent, Mike Harber, 3,202 to 1,141 votes. County Coroner, Tom Clary and County Surveyor, Scotty Simer ran opposed.

In Oregon County, voters turned down Constitutional Amendment No. 3: Selection of Supreme Court and Court of Appeals Judges, approved to Proposition A: Transferring Certain Obligations and Control of the City's Police Force, failed Proposition B: Create the Health and Education Trust Fund, and voted yes for Proposition E: Affordable Health Care Plans through a State-Based Health Benefit Exchange. The results for the referendums were the same statewide.

For state offices, Oregon County voted for Todd Akin over Claire McCaskill for U.S. Senator, Dave Spence over Jay Nixon for Governor, Peter Kinder over Susan Montee for Lieutenant Governor, Shane Schoeller over Jason Kander for Secretary of State, Chris Koster over Ed Martin for Attorney General, Cole McNary over Clint Zweifel for State Treasurer, Jo Ann Emerson over Jack Rushin for U.S. Rep. District 8 and Jeffrey Pogue over Shane Van Steenis for State Rep. District 143, and Mike Cunningham ran unopposed for State Senator District 33. Oregon County results for U.S. Senate and Governor differed from the final results. Claire McCaskill won the race for U.S. Senator and Jay Nixon secured another term as Governor.

In the election for U.S. President and Vice President, Oregon County residents voted for Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan over Barack Obama and Joe Biden, 2,886 to 1,419. Statewide, voters chose Romney and Ryan, 1,478,961 over Obama and Biden, 1,215,031. Nationwide, President Obama and Vice President Biden defeated their opponents and will serve another term.

At the request of The South Missourian News readers, detailed election results of the local races from Oregon County precincts have been included.
