Christmas Celebrations Planned for area

Wednesday, November 28, 2012

Alton, Thayer and Mammoth Spring residents, along with community officials are preparing for events to celebrate the holiday season.

In Alton, 'Christmas on the Square' will be held on Friday, Nov. 30. Businesses located around the square will be open late on Friday evening to serve the public. Shops will have special sales and refreshments for customers.

On Saturday, Dec. 1, the Little Miss and Mr. Merry Christmas coronation begins at 9:00 a.m. at the Alton High School gym. The Christmas parade, sponsored by the Alton Culture Club, begins at 11:00 a.m. The floats are judged at 10:30 a.m. in the school parking lot. After the parade, a live nativity scene can be viewed on the Courthouse lawn at 12:30 p.m.

Also on Saturday, Dec. 1, the community can enjoy an evening parade in Thayer. Thayer's Christmas parade will begin at 6:00 p.m., beginning at the old elementary building and ending at Thayer High School. Immediately following the parade, the Little Miss and Mr. and Junior Miss and Mr. Merry Christmas coronation will be held in front of the Bank of Thayer.

Mammoth Spring has a day full of activities planned on Saturday, Dec. 8. Mammoth Spring Police Officer Jamie Turnbough has organized a 5k 'Dog Jog' in efforts to raise money for a drug dog for the department. Runners will meet at the Mammoth Spring Information Center at 10:00 a.m. "It is a fun run, you may bring your dog, but it is not a requirement," Turnbough said.

Another fundraiser for the drug dog is a raffle for a gun, which will be given away on Saturday, Dec. 8. The Police Department is also seeking private donations. The amount needed for the purchase of a new dog is $5,000, which pays for the dog and its training. The department's last drug dog died a couple of years ago, and the department has been trying for about a month to raise funds for another.

Registration for the 5k Dog Jog is $30, and forms must be sent off by Friday, Nov. 30. Registration forms are available at the Mammoth Spring City Hall.

In the evening of Dec. 8, Mammoth Spring's Christmas parade will begin at 5:30 p.m. The parade begins at the school and will end at Simmons Bank. Following the parade, there will be the tree lighting ceremony at Simmons Bank. Refreshments will be offered at the tree lighting ceremony, along with a hayride for anyone who wants to go, around town.
