Milton Lester "M.L." White Jr, of Viola, Ark., son of the late Milton L. White Sr. and Ellavie Black White, was born Jan. 11, 1931, in Fort Sumner, N.M. He departed this life on Dec. 3, 2012 in Mountain Home, Ark., at the age of 81 years 10 months and 22 days.
M.L. served in the United States Army for 2 years while he fought in the Korean War and was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and United Nations Service medals. He also served as the VFW post 777 Commander for 4 years.
He was united in marriage to Helen Barber on July 3, 1954 in Viola, Ark. They had five children and he worked as an iron worker until 1967. He moved to Viola in 1969, where he served as a Boy Scouts of America Master for five years and a Camp Chaplain for two years.
He was a devout Christian and a faithful member of Enterprise Baptist Church for 43 years, since 1969. He served his church and community as a Board Member of the Big Creek Association for 35 years, taught Sunday School, Wednesday night Bible Study and Sunday nights Training Union for a total of 36 years. He also served as a Trustee of the church for 24 years.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Helen, to whom he was married for 58 years, a son Rickey Painter and wife, Debbie, of Viola, daughter Kathy Mead of Portales, N.M., a son Gary White and wife, Cindy, of Havre, Mont., a daughter Penny Hannah and husband, Pete, of Austin, Ark., and a son Timothy White and wife, Melissa, of Viola; 12 grandchildren: Andrew, Tiffany and Kevin Painter; J.D. and Becky Mead; Brandy and Sean White; Amber and Lori Lynn Hannah; Amber, Destiny and Braden White, and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and one great-grandchild.
Funeral Services were Friday, Dec. 7, 2012 at Enterprise Baptist Church, with burial to at Viola Cemetery, under the direction of Cox-Blevins Funeral Home of Salem. Pallbearers were Phillip Cotter, Dick Roach, Bobby Roper, Butch Cotter, Steve Bowles and Ken Rogers. Honorary Pallbearers were: Jimmy Roberts, Jr., Duane Barber and A.J. Neal.
