The Sharp County communities of Evening Shade and Cave City are, once again, mourning the loss of a child. Valerie Bailey, 13, of Evening Shade was discovered deceased in her bed in the early morning hours of Jan. 22 when her mother attempted to wake her for school.

Evening Shade First Responders, the Sharp County Sheriff's Department and Arkansas State Police responded to the home of Kevin and Jo Ann Bailey in Evening Shade. Valerie was later pronounced dead by Coroner Doug Wortham. Bailey's body was sent to the Arkansa State Medical Examiner's office for an autopsy, but a Sharp County Sheriff's Departments report says no foul play is expected in the tragic death.

Valerie was student at Cave City. A Facebook page created in her honor has over one thousand members who have shared their condolences and memories of Valerie. Community support for the family and love for Valerie showed on the page as poems and numerous photos were posted of the child.

Over the last two years, the area has experienced more than its share of teenager deaths, and the sadness led to the postings, including some from complete strangers offering condolences. Bailey's service was held on Jan. 26 at the Cave City gym, and the small community rallied around the family in its time of need.

As with many families of young children who experience an unexpected loss, the family is without adequate insurance for burial. Accounts have been set up to help the family with burial expenses at Bank of Cave City branches at Strawberry, Lynn, Evening Shade and Cave City. If you can help, every little bit will help with the high cost of burial.
