Cavemen dominate Izard County Tournament

Wednesday, January 30, 2013

The only word to describe Cave City's performance at the 2013 Izard County Tournament at Melbourne is dominant.

The Cavemen and women took home the first place trophies in three of the four tournament brackets.

In the senior boys division, the Cavemen took on the Calico Rock Pirates. The Pirates held the top seeded Cavemen tight in the first quarter, and were tied at 12 at the end of one. By halftime, the class 4A team began to show strength in the depth department. The class 1A Pirates played eight players in the first half, but Cave City was rotating entire five man line-ups every few minutes. By the end of the first half, Cave City had taken a 32-25 lead.

Cave City's senior center Chaz Matthews had 10 points in the first half, while Calico Rock's senior Deion Woods had five.

The lead got even bigger in the third quarter when the Cavemen outscored the Pirates 24-13 in the third to take a 56-38 lead into the final period.

Calico Rock's chances of a comeback were killed with two minutes left in the game when senior forward Remington Lively fouled out. Lively had 14 points for the Pirates. The Cavemen took home their third tournament title of the night by beating Calico Rock 73-54.

Matthews led the Cavemen with 14 points in the game.

In the senior girls bracket, the Cavewomen took on the Melbourne Lady Bearkatz. Despite being down as many as 19 points, and a key senior being cut and bloodied in the final period, the Lady Bearkatz made this a close one, only to fall 48-45 after missing a buzzer beater three to tie the game.

With just 1:12 left in the game, Melbourne took a 45-44 lead. Shortly after taking the lead, Melbourne senior Karli Gillihan was taken out of the game due to a cut above her nose. Gillihan returned with about 40 seconds left on the clock, but her return wasn't enough to stop the Cavewomen from hitting clutch free throws and taking the lead.

The only championship game Cave City didn't appear in was the junior girls game, in which host team Melbourne knocked off the Izard County junior Lady Cougars 39-22.

The junior Cavemen beat Izard County 43-24 to take home first place in the junior boys division.

Melbourne's girls basketball coach and athletic director Tim Massey said Cave City had a good tournament.

"They normally do have a good tournament here. Lots of times the biggest school with the most kids to chose from is going to win, and that's what they did here," Massey said.

Massey also said he is proud of the way Melbourne girls played.

"We were very disappointed at halftime to be down 15. We had some great looks in the first half, we just couldn't get the ball to go in," Massey said. " In the second half we came back from being down 19 points and actually took the lead. I think that says a lot about our character. I think it's a testament to how hard they worked all season. I'm very proud of them, I think they showed a lot of guts."

With the win in the championship game, the junior Lady Bearkatz became county champions and moved to 15-3 this season.

The 2014 Izard County Tournament will be held at Calico Rock High School.
