The Thayer boys JV basketball team, picked up another win, and the Varsity boys team added a "W" pover East Carter, on Tuesday, Jan. 22. The Bobcats were scheduled for back to back games on Thursday and Friday, but that schedule was cut in half.
Due to the possibility of freezing rain on Thursday evening, Thayer postponed its games vs. Gainesville, picking up an additional day of practice, before Friday night's games with Bakersfield. The Gainesville game was rescheduled for Thursday, Jan. 31
Even though coach Marc Pitts JV Bobcat team jumped out to a substantial first quarter lead, with ball steals and points in the paint from Payton Risner, the JV Lions hit a couple of three point shots for a mini-rally, late in the first quarter, cutting Thayers lead to 23-10 after one.
A Tristan Ollar jump shot from ten feet out, and a couple of blocked shots by William Tillman helped the JV Cats to a 40-19 halftime lead. Thayer scored only three points in the third quarter, but its lead was 43-28 at that break. The Lions have some up and coming talent but they could not wipe out the huge lead the young Cats had established. Final score, JV Bobcats 58, Bakersfield JV 40
Thayer Courtwarming ceremonies between games included the crowning of senior candidate, Miss Ashton Rees, as the Thayer High School 2013 Courtwarming Queen. The Bobcats then tipped off four quarters of varsity basketball.
Thayer's quickness and full court ball pressure, took a big toll on the Bakersfiled Lions throughout the first and second quarters. Point guard Jacob Foley's quick hands on defense led to Bobcat steals and scores by junior Richard Newman helped produce a 48-24 Bobcat lead at the half break.
Twelve different Thayer Bobcats got their name in the record book with points in the game. They were led by 16 points from Jacob Foley, 15 from Richard Newman and 12 points for 6th man senior Levi Jenkins in the 81-52 Bobcat Courtwarming win over Bakersfield.
