Missouri State-West Plains tuition to increase
Students attending Missouri State University-West Plains during the 2013-2014 academic year will see an increase in their basic tuition. Members of the Missouri State University Board of Governors have approved a resolution increasing tuition from $111 to $114 per credit hour. Tuition for out-of-state residents will go up from $222 to $228 per credit hour.
"We are very conscious of the impact tuition has on the ability of students from this region to access higher education," Missouri State-West Plains Chancellor Drew Bennett said. "The decision to raise tuition was made with the input of faculty, staff and student representatives, who reached the consensus that this modest increase was necessary to keep up with inflation, serve a growing population of students, and offset previous budget cuts while maintaining the high quality standards we have achieved."
The resolution approved by the board also outlined other fees charged by the university, and several of those saw increases, as well. The fee charged for courses in the Associate of Science in Nursing degree program rose from $140 per credit hour to $145 per credit hour. Out-of-state tuition for nursing courses will go from $280 to $290. Fees for courses in the Associate of Applied Science in Respiratory Care program will go from $134 to $137 for Missouri residents and $268 to $274 for non-residents. The cost of taking online courses will go from $126 per credit hour to $129 for Missouri residents and non-residents. Students taking courses through the campus' high school dual credit program will see their fees go from $56 to $57 per credit hour.
University officials explained the fee structure for nursing, respiratory care and online courses are different than that for other classes due to the additional costs associated in providing these programs. High school dual credit courses are offered at half the rate of normal tuition.
Students staying in the Grizzly House residence hall also will see an increase in room and board. Those fees will go up from $2,650 per semester in 2012-13 for housing and a 20-meal-per-week plan at the Putnam Student Center cafeteria to $2,700 per semester. Summer charges will increase from $1,129 to $1,150.
And, if approved by students at their annual elections in April, the student activity fee will increase from $17 per semester to $20 per semester. Summer charges will increase from $8.50 to $10. The student activity fee covers the cost of access to the civic center pool and fitness center, tickets to events hosted by the University/Community Programs (U/CP) Department, and organizational support for student life.
