For many single parents, finding and affording daycare, holding down a job and maintaining a household can be very difficult. So imagine the pressure for those attempting to go to college, at the same time, to provide a better future for their children.

That is why the Ozark Foothills Single Parent Scholarship Fund was established in 2001. Since that time, it and has awarded over 170 scholarships valued at just under $90,000. Since the Single Parent Scholarships come from a donation based fund, the public's generosity has allowed Sharp and Fulton County single parents to receive benefits.

On Oct. 22, the scholarship board made awards for the Spring 2014 semester, at the Cyber Cafe at Ash Flat Ozarka College.

Sharp County Board President Dwight Sharp, Board welcomed the group and explained the scholarships are awarded every fall and spring semester.

"It is incredible to see the successes we have seen. Every person that recieves the scholarships is a single parent with minor children," Sharp said. The board hopes support will continue so that scholarships continue to be regularly awarded.

While single parents face many struggles, the scholarships give them a boost they may need to get buy for a semester. This year, everyone who applied was awarded the scholarships.

Felicia Bramlett was the first scholarship recipient, Board member Sandy Carpenter explained Bramlett was forced to drop out of college as she raised her children, and was back for a second time to receive a scholarship to further her education.

Fulton County, scholarship winners included: Lacy Garrett and Spring Newton.

Sharp County winners were Bramlett, A.K. Barnes, Hope McComas, Thaddeus "T.J."Steed, Ashley Huggins and Devon Lambert.

While the recipients enjoyed their awards, their children enjoyed the refreshments after the awards..

The scholarship board is currently conducting a fundraiser for a handmade Razorback quilt. The drawing will be held on Dec. 11 and chances are $2 or 6 for $10.
