Scot football players report
For the first time since 1951, a Lyon College football team took the field, as around 72 players reported to camp Aug. 13. A couple of local former high school standouts - Thayer's Hunter Ary (5-9, 150-pound defensive back) and Highland's Carr Hill (6-0, 200-pound linebacker) were among the group of freshmen hitting the practice field for the Scots.
Lyon College Head Coach Kirk Kelley is excited about the rebirth of the program, after months of work to reestablish the team and recruit players. The Scots will host two intrasquad scrimmages this fall, Sept. 13 and Oct. 18 at Batesville High School's Pioneer Stadium. Intercollegiate play will begin in the fall of 2015 as Lyon College joins the Central States Football League.
Much of opening day involved issuing equipment, signing necessary paperwork, attending meetings and going through a photo session for individual players.
With those tasks out of the way, the team finally stepped on to the newly built Lyon College football practice field, behind Scots Baseball Field, for the first time and began molding the product that is still a little over a year away from facing competition.
The opening workout was in shorts and helmets only.
Kelley said the community seems very excited about what's about to happen.
"I don't know how many people have called me and asked if they can come watch practice," the coach stated. "I've told them they most certainly can. We'd love to have anyone out to watch these kids work because we know they're going to work hard each and every day to get better. We just had to get on the field for the first day. These kids are really pumped and so are we."
