Longhorns open state round with back-to-back shutouts
The Viola Longhorns proved to be virtually untouchable in the early portion of the Class 1A State Baseball Tournament at Taylor Field in Pine Bluff, blazing through their first two games by a combined score of 18-0.
In the opening round May 4, Will Wilson held Hermitage completely in check in Viola’s 11-0 five-inning victory.
Wilson only allowed four hits, while striking out four and issuing no walks.
At the dish, Wilson doubled and drove in three runs. Dalton Roork also doubled in the game.
Carson Guffey tripled and finished with two ribbies. Jon Martin had three hits and one RBI, while Dalton Brown logged two hits and two runs-batted-in. Keagen Dunn had two hits and one RBI.
It was then Roork’s turn to dominate and he was dynamite on the bump in the second round on May 11.
He struck out 14, while allowing just two hits and a walk in Viola’s 7-0 shutout of the Concord Pirates.
At the dish, Roork also hit safely twice for the Longhorns.
Guffey had two hits and two RBIs to pace the Horns at the plate. Dunn hit safely twice and drove in a run. Wilson, Brown and Alex Waltrip had a hit and run-batted-in apiece. Martin and Clint Lester had a hit each for Viola.
Martin, Guffey, Dunn (two), Wilson, Roork and Caden Meredith all scored runs.
The Longhorns’ (26-5) run through the state brackets drew to a close with a 13-2 setback to Dierks in the quarterfinal round on May 13.
