Highland Elks Lodge #2539 in Cherokee Village celebrated Flag Day on Sunday, June 9, with members, guests and American Legion Post #346 Honor Guard in attendance. The ceremony was performed by Sue Wimberly/Exalted Ruler and Lodge Officers, Debbie Cochran, Brooks Gooch, Susan Moore, Scott Shaffer and Dianna Welte. Elk Member, Denise Golden sang our National Anthem. The American Legion Honor Guard presented the flag during the ceremony. Afterwards, they gave a 21 Gun Salute and played Taps before old worn and tattered flags gathered from the community were properly disposed of. The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks has made celebrating our National Flag on June 14 mandatory for every Elks Lodge in the country since 1911. The Elks organization was a major influence on the government in declaring this date “National Flag Day”. The Lodge, with permission from their Grand Lodge, celebrated flag day today, due to the 14th being a workday.
