Couple arrested after attempted drowning
An incident occurring July 4 landed a Sharp County couple in jail after it was reported one was attempting to drown their child.
According to a release from the Sharp County Sheriff’s Department, 911 received a call of a father holding his 12-year-old daughter under water at the Huelett access on the Strawberry River.
The Sharp County Sheriff’s Department, Poughkeepsie Fire Department and Spring River Ambulance responded to the call.
When they arrived, they found the victim unconscious and foaming at the mouth. The child was transported by ambulance to a landing zone where Survival Flight flew her to an area hospital.
The father, Christopher Cope, 29, was arrested after fighting with law enforcement. He was transported to the Sharp County Jail where he is being held awaiting the filing of formal charges of domestic battery in the first degree, interference with law enforcement, resisting arrest and intimidating a witness.
The mother, Elizabeth Cope, 32, was arrested after she too, fought with officers. She was also transported to the Sharp County Jail awaiting the filing of formal charges of endangering the welfare of a minor in the first degree, resisting arrest and interference with a law enforcement officer.
