Vera Jamison, of Viola, celebrated her 100th birthday on Oct. 5.

Friends and family celebrated her 100 years at the First Baptist Church in Viola on Saturday, Oct. 5.

Jamison was born in her grandmother’s house in North Wales, Great Britain. Her mother was pregnant with her when on the ship ride to England, and when Jamison was three-months-old, she made the trip back to the United States, where they lived in Pittsburgh, Pa.

She eventually married and moved to Denton, Texas, where she spent a good portion of her life. Throughout her life she has participated in syncopated ladies, which was a dance group in Denton. She was in her 80s then. Jamison’s daughter Arlene Etheridge, said her mother was a dancer in her younger days.

She also said her first job was in cosmetology when she was younger. Arlene and her older brother (by two years) were born on their mother’s birthday.

One way she stayed active in the community is though church. Arlene said her mother has a beautiful singing voice and used to be in the choir at her church in Denton. “She has always been active in church until recently. Thought she might not be able to volunteer for activities, she attends regularly,” said Arlene.

She also delivered Meals on Wheels for 11 years, and participated in pageants in Denton. “She won Ms. Mature Denton and she went on to do the Dallas Fair and she came in third place for Ms. Dallas,” Arlene added.

Jamison is able to live independently and fixes her own breakfast and lunch, with her daughter Arlene coming to check on her throughout the day. She loves sitting outside on her porch and having the hummingbird feed full.

The day following her birthday party, she told her daughter, “It was like a big dream.”

She is a fan of chocolate, but has always ate healthy over the years, possibly one of her secrets to a long life.

“I’m just glad I have lived this long,” said Jamison. She owes her long life to God and eating healthy.

Jamison has three children, five grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 17 great great grandchildren.
