Thayer beats Mountain Grove 27-8

On Friday, Oct. 25, the Thayer Bobcats beat the Mountain Grove Panthers 27-8 at Mountain Grove.

With the win, Thayer upgrades its record to 8-1 on the season. The Bobcats host Diamond Wildcats (Diamond, Missouri) in a non-league game on Friday, Nov. 1. The Wildcats go into the game with a record of 2-7. Diamond lost 40-6 in their recent league outing against Lockwood/Golden City (Lockwood, Missouri). With the loss, Mountain Grove moves to 0-9 on the season

The Thayer Bobcats found themselves in an unusual position in the game against Mountain Grove. They trailed at the end of the first quarter 8-7. However, the Bobcats scored 12 points in the second quarter and led at the half 19-8. The Bobcats shut Mountain Grove in the second half and scored 8 points in the fourth quarter to make the final score 27-8.

Thayer moved to 8-1 overall for the season and 6-1 in Conference.

On offense, Jayce Haven rushed 15 times for a total of 49 yards. Haven completed 5 of 9 for 105 yards. Jackson Willison carried the football 12 times for 23 yards. Jordan Madden rushed 11 times for 60 yards. Grimes carried the football twice for a total of 11 yards.

Madden caught 1 pass for 18 yards. Lane Grimes caught 2 passes for 54 yards. Arthur Tate caught 1 pass for 8 yards. Logan Doss caught 1 pass for 15 yards. Haven had 2 punt returns for a total of 19 yards and scored a two-point conversion after a touchdown. Madden had a rushing touchdown and also caught a pass for a touchdown. Doss caught a touchdown pass.

On defense, Austin Green had 8 solo tackles and 4 assists (12 total). Green had 4 tackles for a loss and 3 pressers. Griffin Willison had 3 solo tackles and 7 assists (10 total). Madden had 7 solo tackles and 1 assist (8 total). Doss had 3 solo and 4 assists (7 total). Tate had 3 solo and 3 assists (6 total). Haven had 5 solo tackles and 1 assist (6 total).

Haven forced a fumble, and Madden recovered a fumble. Jesse White broke up 4 passes, and Pitts broke up one. Cody Brosh had 2 sacks.

Haven punted 6 times for 229 yards and a 38.2 yards per punt average. Kale Willison kicked off 5 times for 191 yards and a 38.2 yards per kickoff average. Willison kicked one extra point.

For the game, the Bobcats attempted 9 passes and completed 5 for 105 yards. Mountain Grove threw the football 25 times and completed 12 for 144 yards. Thayer rushed the football 42 times for 141 yards and gained a total of 246 yards for the game. The Bobcats totally shut down the Panthers in the rushing category as Thayer held the Panthers to 7 yards on the ground in 30 attempts. Mountain Grove had 151 total yards for the game. The Panthers only averaged 2.74 yards per play.

The Bobcats made 7 first downs, had 1 turnover and were penalized 9 times for 85 yards. The Panthers had 10 first downs, 3 turnovers and were penalized 6 times for 65 yards.

The Bobcats scored first at the 9:37 mark in the first quarter on a pass from Haven to Madden for an 18-yard touchdown. Willison kicked the extra point, and the Bobcats led 7-0. With 2:22 remaining in the first quarter, Mountain Grove intercepted a pass and took it 34 yards for a touchdown. After a successful two-point conversion, Mountain Grove led 8-7. With 4:52 remaining in the first half, Madden scored a touchdown on a three-yard run. The two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful. The Bobcats regained the lead at this point 13-8. At 0:45 remaining in the first half, Haven completed a pass to Doss for a 15-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful. Thayer led 19-8 at the half. With 7:54 remaining in the game, Haven connected with Lane Grimes for a 27-yard touchdown. Haven made the two-point conversion with the final score being 27-8.
