Annual trivia night benefiting Grizzly Athletics scheduled

Wednesday, January 15, 2020

Come in from the cold and join us Jan. 25 for the 17th annual Trivia Night benefitting Grizzly Athletics programs at Missouri State University-West Plains.

The trivia portion of this fun-filled event will begin at 6:30 p.m. in Joe Paul Evans Arena at the West Plains Civic Center, which is sponsoring. It will feature questions on a variety of topics, organizers said.

Teams of area residents will be pitted against each other for the opportunity to win the coveted Trivia Night Trophy. Another event sponsor, The Pizza Shack, will provide pizza for participants.

Grizzly Athletic Director Angela Totty said participants will appreciate the evening’s competition and rules.

“Technology makes trivia too easy. All participants will again be asked to put their phones in a basket in the center of their tables,” she explained. “And, we will have the very popular multi-media categories again.

“We also are challenging businesses to put a team together in order to show off the traveling trophy at their business, although the 2019 winning team has thrown down the challenge gauntlet,” she added.

Teams of eight will be asked questions in such categories as geography, science, movies and everything in between. The team with the highest score after 10 rounds of questions will win the trophy along with some other great prizes. Prizes also will be awarded to the second- and third-place teams.

In addition to the trivia contest, teams are encouraged to decorate their table however they choose for the chance to win other prizes in the Table Decorating Contest. Table decorating begins at 5 p.m. with judging for the table decorations to take place by 6:20 p.m.

Past winning themes have included Rocking into Retirement, a construction zone, hunting, the St. Louis Cardinals, Hawaiian getaway, a surgery room, and Mark Twain’s “Adventures of Tom Sawyer.”

“The possibilities are only limited by imagination,” Totty said. “If you aren’t a trivia buff, you can show off your skills in decorating.

“Regardless of your skills, you can bring food and enjoy hanging out with your friends while you support Grizzly Athletics,” she added.

The cost of participating is $160 per team of up to eight members, and pre-registration is required. Businesses also can become a sponsor of the event for just $100, Totty said.

Sponsors are still being secured, but those who have signed up include Chadwick Peterson Allstate; Don’s Auto Service; Edward Jones-Kevin Gleghorn; Gary’s Tire; Grennan Communications; Hirsch Feed & Farm Supply; KC Garage; Kiko Japanese Steak House; Mayfield Auto Repair, LLC; Pizza Shack; Mega Motorsports; Missouri State University-West Plains Student Government Association; Ozark Quick Wash; Smitty & Company; Southern Bank; Squires and Squires Investments, Inc.; State Farm-Ramona Heiney; Wayward Son Productions; West Plains Civic Center; West Plains Electric Supply, Inc.; and Wood & Huston Bank.

“Proceeds from the evening provide support to the Grizzly Athletic programs,” Totty said.

“Traditions are very important to higher education institutions and college teams. This event is one of those traditions that has reached a milestone, and we are working towards continued success with the help of the Grizzly Booster Club and the communities Missouri State-West Plains serves,” she added.
