Additional charges for retired Fr. Carr

Additional charges have been added since an initial press release from April 27, regarding allegations of sexual misconduct involving Fr. Gary Carr, who was pastor at Sacred Heart Mission Church in Thayer and St. Mary Parish and principal at St. Mary Catholic School in West Plains.

According to a press release from Monday, July 20, “the Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau has received three additional allegations involving Fr. Carr. The three allegations were reviewed by the Diocesan Safe Environment Review Board at its Mo. st recent June meeting, and all three were found to meet the criteria for publication as they satisfy the prevailing standard of Semblance of Truth.”

Allegations involve three males, who are now adults, alleging Fr. Carr made inappropriate physical/sexual contact - one in 1987 and two in the early 1990s. Each individual report has been forwarded to jurisdiction where the incident is alleged to happened: Jasper County Prosecuting Attorney two to Butler County Prosecuting Attorney.

Fr. Carr was born in St. Louis in 1954 and in 1982 was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Springfield – Cape Girardeau by Bishop Bernard F. Law. “Father Carr was placed on administrative leave and restricted in his priestly ministry by Bishop James V. Johnston, Jr. in 2008. This action was re-affirmed by Bishop Edward M. Rice in 2016 upon his arrival to the Diocese of Springfield – Cape Girardeau. Father Carr is retired and resides in St. Louis,” is stated in the press release.
