Melbourne Lady Bearkatz advance to 2A State Basketball Championship Game: Bearkatz wrap-up a great season
The Melbourne Lady Bearkatz continued their winning ways as the clinched a spot in the championship game in Hot Springs.
To get to the championship game, on March 8, the Lady Bearkatz defeated the Riverside Lady Rebels by 51 points (77-26). On March 12, Melbourne defeated the Mansfield Lady Tigers by 42 points (68-26). Melbourne led by 21-8 at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Bearkatz led 47-12 at halftime. On March 15, the path to the championship was cleared as Melbourne defeated the Fordyce Lady Redbugs by 37 points (70-33).
Melbourne and Salem are in the same conference and have played each other in regular season and tournament action.
In regular season action, on Jan. 5, Melbourne defeated Salem at Salem by two points (43-41). Then, on Jan. 28, at Melbourne, the Lady Bearkatz defeated the Lady Greyhounds by five points (47-42). On Feb. 27, in tournament action at Melbourne, the Lady Bearkatz won again by five points (52-47). Again, at Melbourne, in tournament action, on March 6, Melbourne defeated Salem by 24 points (67-43).

On March 11 in tournament action at Melbourne, the Melbourne Bearkatz defeated the Buffalo Island Central Mustangs by 10 points (55-45).
At the end of the first quarter, the Bearkatz held a one-point lead 16-15. The Mustangs scored 13 points in the second quarter while Melbourne scored 9, and Buffalo Island Central led at halftime 28-25. The Bearkatz held the Mustangs to 2 points in the third quarter while scoring 11. Melbourne led at the end of the third quarter 36-30. The scoring pace picked up in the fourth quarter as the Bearkatz score 19 points, and the Mustangs scored 15 points.
On March 13 in tournament action at Melbourne, the Caddo Hills Indians (Norman, Arkansas) defeated the Melbourne Bearkatz 40-31. In a low-scoring first quarter, the Indians (30-4) managed 9 points, and Melbourne (19-8) scored 6 points. Remi Lawrence and Bradie Gunther each picked up a couple of fouls in the first quarter hampering the Bearkatz. Each team committed turnovers in the first quarter.
