Prescott wins essay contest
Cherokee Elementary third grader Halli Prescott submitted the winning essay during Red Ribbon Week Oct. 21-28. Prescott is in Andrea Davis class. When photographed for her newspaper article, Halli said she was so excited she couldn't believe she won.
The essay topic was based on the theme of this year's Red Ribbon Week, "Rock a Drug Free Life." Her essay follows:
"I chose to rock a drug free life because, drugs are BAD! Using drugs can make you really sick.
First, if you smoke, you can get lung disease. It makes it hard to breathe. Second, drinking alcohol affects your brain. It can get so bad; you don't know where you are. Last, dipping tobacco can rot your teeth. You would have to have fake teeth.
But, not all drugs are bad. Medicine is a drug. That's why they call it a drugstore.
Even so, you should always stay away from drugs. It also hurts your body when you breathe in drugs.
If someone is smoking, stay away. If there is an ash tray, you should also stay away.
The most important rule is NEVER pick up a drug or take a drug if someone offers it to you. If someone does, you should say no, and run away. If you see something on the ground that looks like a drug, don't pick it up.
Now you know all about why you should never do drugs. Always remember, drugs are bad."
