Pirates' early lead falters late

They led for the entire first half, but the Calico Rock Pirates saw the Stephens Roadrunners fight back with a big second half effort, leading to a 63-52 Stephens victory in the opening round of the Class 1A State Tournament March 7 at Pioneer Pavilion in Harrison.

Calico Rock (24-11), the third seed from Region 2, jumped out to a 12-5 lead after the first period and then held on to a 25-22 lead at intermission.

Stephens, the second seed from Region 4, took its first lead early in the third, but the Pirates clawed their way back on top 41-40 after the third period.

The Roadrunners (23-8) then outscored Calico Rock 23-11 in the fourth to push ahead for good and knock the Pirates out of the state tournament.

It was Calico Rock's second trip to the Class 1A State Tournament after a 40-year absence for the program.

Brett James led the Pirates with 18 points. Bryan Parnell followed with 12. Jonathon Trotter and Deion Woods had eight points apiece and Caleb McLain finished with six for Calico Rock.
