Salem Greyhounds start season 3-1; Melbourne Bearkatz up next
The Salem Greyhounds opened the season at home on Sept. 4 against the Walnut Ridge Bobcats with a 34-14 win.
On Sept. 11, the Greyhounds shut out the Dover Pirates 46-0 at Salem. Salem scored 8 points in the first quarter and added 18 points in the second quarter to lead 26-0 at halftime. The Greyhounds added 12 points in the third quarter and led 38-0 at the end of the quarter.
The Greyhounds traveled to Corning on Sept. 18 to face the Bobcats. Corning scored 12 points in the first quarter, and Salem scored 6. The Greyhounds outscored the Bobcats 8-6 in the second quarter, and Salem trailed 18-14 at the half. Salem was shut out in the second half, and Corning scored 8 points in the third quarter and 6 points in the fourth quarter for a 34-14 Corning win.
On Sept. 25, Salem bounced back with a 34-8 win in a conference home game against the Riverview Raiders. The Greyhounds scored 14 points in the first quarter and led 14-0. The second quarter was scoreless, and Salem led at halftime 14-0. While holding Riverview scoreless for three quarter, Salem scored another 6 points in the third quarter to lead 20-0 at quarter’s end. The Greyhounds added 14 points in the fourth quarter, and the Raiders managed to get on the scoreboard with 8 points.
Salem gained 102 yards on the ground and 159 passing for a game total yardage of 261. The Greyhounds held the Raiders to 38 yards on the ground and 57 yards passing for a total of 95 yards for the game.
Salem had 18 first downs, and Riverview made 6 first downs.
Salem committed 2 turnovers and Riverview had 1. Salem was penalized 2 times for 25 yards, and the Raiders were penalized 7 times for 50 yards.
Quarterback Gavin Guiltner completed 13of 19 passes for 146 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Tristian Goodson had 19 carries for 48 yds. Darius Brown had 6 receptions for 74 yards and 2 touchdowns.
The Greyhounds travel to Melbourne on Oct. 2 to meet the Bearkatz.
