Water, the other nutrient!

Why can’t the cows just walk back to the barn, or wade out into the pond, or just drink out of the creek to satisfy their thirst? There are two answers to that question. Number one: our animals performance goals are usually higher than just keeping them alive. Number two: by water location management, we can at least partly control some of the grazing and resting patterns of our livestock. It’s important to realize that water serves two different but very interrelated roles. Water is a nutrient like energy or protein, necessary for animal survival. Livestock need an ample, clean, and convenient supply of water or it will be a limiting nutrient and hold down potential performance. It’s important to emphasize that convenience is an important part of providing water. When the line at the water tank or the checkout line is too long, “we” all decide that we can get by without it. Lower water intake means lower dry matter intake with lower production. In addition to being a nutrient, water can be used as a tool to control the behavior of livestock. Work done at the University of Missouri has shown that when cattle travel over 600 feet to water it becomes a social activity and they come together. There are different degrees of “flocking” instincts in our livestock, but the important point is that the distance to water significantly impacts livestock behavior. Time spent around the water tank can also be influenced by ambient temperature, shade, or lack of shade, etc. This behavior is important because it impacts the grazing time, water and mineral intake, and manuring patterns.

The Biden Administration Continues its Reckless Tax-and-Spending Spree

High prices at the pump, increasing costs at the grocery store and excessive monthly energy bills are all devastating for the hardworking Arkansans trying to make ends meet. For at least one northeast Arkansas resident, rising expenses made it too dif ficult to continue running his contracting business, so he closed the doors. We need policies that support small businesses, decrease the cost of fuel and food, and help grow paychecks. Instead, President Biden and congressional Democrats are on a reckless tax-and-spending spree. More spending and tax hikes are not the answer.
