Hopefully, when you read this month’s column our forecast held true and we received much needed rain. This has been the hottest and driest summer I have experienced since living in Cherokee Village. It is an experience I do not wish us to repeat.
On Saturday, June 11, was a great day to have a gathering of family and friends! We had a good turnout including many who traveled great distances. The potluck meal was beautiful to view and delicious to eat.
Lyon College’s softball team members stepped off the field and ended their 2022 season back in May, but one team member, sophomore Emilee Engles, leaves her heart out on the field every time she leaves.
The new Emerson plant in Ash Flat officially opened its doors in celebration of its 277,000-square-foot manufacturing facility on Friday, July 29. In attendance for the ribbon-cutting ceremony were several high-profile state and local officials, including Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson.
Leonard Pickle Jr., 82, will be spending the next 18 years in the Arkansas Department of Corrections. Pickle pleaded guilty to a sexual assault in the 2nd degree that occurred on June 12, 1995, of a seven-year-old victim, according to the sentencing order filed on July 26.

High school students interested in pursuing fishing at the college level have until Friday, Aug. 5 to register for the 2022 Abu Garcia Bassmaster High School Combine presented by Skeeter.
Summer is coming to an end for the Longhorns with the first day of school scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 11. The Longhorns and Lady Longhorns have been working on their golf game and are ready to hit the course. The Lady Longhorns have three returning golfers, Senior-AJ McCandlis, Junior-Kailey Hallmark, Senior, Sayde Waltrip and have added three new team members, Juniors-Haylee Crotts, Emily Martin and Freshman-Addison Luther. Longhorns have one returning golfer, Junior-Braden Williams and have added an additional ten new team members, Seniors-Rowan James, AJ Kinder, Juniors-Gavin Blevins, Ryan Stone, Quade Perryman, Aiden Perry, Sophomores-Kody Hart, Seth Worsham and Freshman Beau Cowgill. The Lady Longhorns and Longhorns will participate in their first matches of the season on Aug. 11 at Turkey Mountain. The Longhorn Booster Association and the Viola Athletic Department want to wish them the best of luck this golf season!
