It is estimated that more than 20 percent of Arkansas households are food insecure. The Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance also estimates that 1 in 3 children in the state are facing food insecurity.

Salem High School Beta Club still at it

School may have been out for the summer, but Salem High School Beta Club members were out doing what they have always done: helping the community.They have volunteered at many events throughout the summer, such as helping the Chamber of Commerce and the Salem VFW at the Fulton County Homecoming Festival, directing traffic at the Fulton County Fair, cleaning up yards for people in the community, lending a hand with the Fulton County Heritage Organization at the Old Main fundraiser and assisting teachers to prepare for the school year. The members are planning many more events for the school year. This includes the return of the annual fishing tournament on Norfork Lake, which is scheduled for Saturday, March 4, 2023.

Capitol Week in Review

The Senate and House Committees on Education are scheduled to vote on next year’s adequacy report at their meeting in early October. The committees went over a draft of the adequacy report at their September meeting.

Marking Suicide Prevention Month

In Arkansas, 554 lives were lost to suicide and over 100,000 adults had suicidal thoughts last year, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The tragic reality is a growing number of our family, friends and neighbors suffer from mental health conditions and despair that can lead to attempts to take their own lives.
