Preparing for the 2023 gardening season
As we know all too well, the month of March can be full of “weather unknowns” as temperatures vary from cold to mild, rain and/ or snow, windy or calm… you get the idea. Basically, March is the time when Mother Nature decides to throw whatever she wants at us. When it comes to home gardening though, March is the perfect time to start planning for your crops and getting prepared. One of the first steps in preparing your home garden is taking a soil sample. This soil sample allows for a complete nutrient analysis of the garden area and can identify if fertilizer is needed to improve productivity. A basic soil test focuses on identifying Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K) levels in your soil, as well as a pH reading. Each of the numbers provided on a soil test report provides insight on how much amendment needs to be added to your garden, and serves a critical role in the growth, development and yield of all garden vegetables. The best part though, soil testing through the Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service is free of charge! Another part of planning should include selecting vegetables that homeowners want to produce. For this step, it’s always helpful to draw the garden area out on a piece of paper to determine if the garden space has the capacity to grow needed quantities based on recommended plant spacing. (Keep in mind, a crowded garden makes it harder to identify and treat unwanted pests. Most importantly though, it inhibits good air circulation across plant leaves which is necessary to help battle any unwanted diseases.) When identifying crops to grow in the garden, keep in mind that some vegetables require a cool growing season and must be planted early enough to mature before hot weather OR late enough to mature in the cooler fall months. Others require warmer or even hot weather and longer periods to reach maturity. When it comes to variety selection, many new cultivars are resistant to diseases and have heavy yields, making them an eas
