Ozarka Foundation announces the Francis “Tuffy” Lake Endowed Scholarships

MELBOURNE, AR — Francis “Tuffy” Lake, of Mountain View, has partnered with the Ozarka College Foundation to offer two $500 scholarships each year. Tuffy’s generous $20,000 contribution will establish two endowed scholarships. The Lake scholarships will be awarded to two Ozarka - Mountain View students each year: one enrolled in a nursing program and the other in the welding program.

The State of Steel

The US Steel industry, at this moment, is resilient. The Congressional Steel Caucus held its annual “State of the Steel” event this week to hear updates from executives in the industry. The caucus is a bipartisan group of members who work in support of a strong domestic steel industry that supplies good jobs and enhances our national security. I chair the caucus, and the vice chair is my colleague Rep. Frank Mrvan, a Democrat representing northwest Indiana.

Letter to the Editor

Many of those who battle addiction do so in silence. However, on occasion they are the ones with the biggest smiles and some of the kindest people. They are the ones who is always there for others but who still feels alone. Sometimes they require someone to speak up when they cannot. Find out how they are doing. Help them. Remind them of their advantages, jobs, education, families, friends, or other resources they may have. Sometimes people fail to realize the potential consequences of even one drug use decision. In talking to them, they may be able to connect their decisions to use with the troubles they are having in life. It may seem difficult to suggest a friend enter treatment, yet doing so could ultimately result in their life being saved. Make it clear you will help them enter treatment, but you won’t support their habit. They might be afraid, unprepared, or resistant to change. But with help, they can get there. You are not alone if you or a loved one are battling addiction. The nightmare of addiction can be ended. Getting help is the first step.

Sharp County Community Foundation hosts Giving Tree Grant awards reception

Sharp County Community Foundation, an affiliate of Arkansas Community Foundation, recently hosted a Giving Tree Grant awards reception to recognize the recipients of a Sharp County Giving Tree Grant. Just under $13,500 was granted to the following Sharp County nonprofits: City of Hardy Cave City First Assembly Food Pantry Ozark Foothills Literacy Project Ronald McDonald House Charities of Arkansas Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund For Every Dog Rescue, Inc. “The Sharp County Community Foundation wanted to have a reception to recognize and raise awareness of the amazing work being done by the charities and nonprofits in our community,” said Dan Milligan, executive director of the Sharp County affiliate. “Our community really showed their support by attending the reception and congratulating the grant recipients. FNBC and Bank of Cave City sponsored the event, and the Spring River Innovation Hub graciously allowed us to host our reception in their event space.”
